Green solution for solvents TECHNOLOGY WORTH WATCHING

Financial Times (London) By FIONA HARVEY

A new type of solvent is being developed at the University of Leicester, aimed at being recyclable and environmentally friendly. The Leicester team has been studying ionic liquids, non-volatile liquids that offer a clean way to carry out chemical processes, in contrast to strong acids. They have found that mixtures of zinc chloride and choline chloride form non-volatile liquids at ambient temperatures and can be used as solvents. These mixtures are also much cheaper than the ionic liquids used previously and do not contain aluminium, which can cause environmental damage. The liquids can be used for applications such as metal finishing, catalysis, batteries and metal recycling. University of Leicester; tel: 0116 252 2087
